Operating Systems FAQ

Question: How do I enable the Automatic Update feature in Windows 2000 or XP?

Answer: You may enable the Automatic Update feature in Windows 2000 or XP so that it runs regularly. You can do this by following the instructions below for your system:

On Windows XP:

1. Right click on your My Computer Icon and choose Properties. 2. Click on the Automatic Updates tab. 3. Make sure that the “Keep my computer up to date” checkbox is checked. 4. Click on the “Automatically download the update, and install them on the schedule that I specify” radio button. 5. Select the day of the week and a time that you know your system will be running.

On Windows 2000:

1. Click on the Start menu and choose Control Panels from the list. 2. Locate the Automatic Update control panel and open it by double clicking on the icon. 3. Make sure that the “Keep my computer up to date” checkbox is checked. 4. Click on the “Automatically download the update, and install them on the schedule that I specify” radio button. 5. Select the day of the week and a time that you know your system will be running.

We feel it isn’t necessary for you to check for updates every day. However, if an issue arises and you know there is an update, you should obtain it manually.
