Summer Well Spent: Beyond the Game

Blane Wallace ’27 spent his summer gaining firsthand experience in the sports industry through an internship with the Iowa Suns, where every day brought new opportunities to lead, coach and learn.

For the sports management major with double minors in sports communication and coaching, the experience strengthened his career goals while allowing him to make a difference in the lives of young athletes.

“I learned the responsibilities and focus of what it takes to be in some type of sports management job in real life,” Wallace said.

His day-to-day responsibilities included facility maintenance, scheduling and his favorite part of the job: coaching young athletes.

“I get to help these kids, coach them and give them advice on life and athletics,” he said. “Being able to help them is just an amazing feeling. Also, being able to work in the sports industry is so eye opening about what all goes into the job.”

Wallace said his coursework and campus involvement at Simpson gave him a solid foundation for the internship. From lessons in his major courses to his work-study position with intramurals, he entered the role prepared to contribute from day one.

“My college classes and campus experience prepared me for this internship greatly,” he said. “Working for my work study has helped me greatly, doing intramurals, being around people and helping run the facilities around Simpson.”
