American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment
In the fall of 2008, President Byrd signed the Presidents Climate Commitment, calling on Simpson to implement serious changes in sustainability and create a plan for attaining carbon neutrality. While the ultimate goal is still distant, Simpson has already taken many steps towards a more sustainable establishment.

The Climate Commitment has led to the establishment of new campus organizations such as EarthCorps and the Sustainability Committee.
