What is an “internship”?
The National Association of Colleges and Employers provides this definition:
An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.”

Who should participate in internships?
Students of all majors and levels (freshman-senior) are able to participate in internships; all Simpson students should consider completing an internship. Please note that some academic departments require students to complete internships as part of their curriculum, so you should consult with your faculty advisor to ensure all requirements are met.

When are internships offered? How long do they last?
Internships are offered during all terms (Fall, Spring, May Term, and Summer). The length of an internship varies from site to site, often ranging from semester-long to year-long in duration. Keeping your schedule and any departmental requirements in mind, you should work with your faculty advisor to plan ahead for your internship.

Are internships paid?
In many instances, yes, internships are paid, but this varies from site to site and is determined by the employer/organization hosting the intern. While some internships are paid, others are done on a voluntary basis without pay. Whether or not an intern is paid, and how much, often depends on the industry and field of the internship.

Can I get college credit for my internship?
Yes you can! Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have secured an internship can enroll to receive academic credit for their internship. To receive credit, you will need to register for the course beforebeginning your internship and fulfill all other course requirements. You can earn up to 16 credits total through internships; please consult with your faculty advisor to determine if your major/minor has specific credit requirements.
