Sustainability
Current Projects
While the Sustainability Committee, Earth Corps and the Environmental Awareness Club (EAC) have completed many projects over the last couple of years, Simpson still has sustainable projects ready for committed work. Several new projects are pushing the college closer to its ultimate goal of carbon neutrality.
Indianola Municipal Utilities, EAC, and the Sustainability Committee have teamed up to purchase 500 reusable water bottles for students who pledge to stop using disposable water bottles. These water bottles will have various pamphlets inside addressing the importance of sustainability at Simpson, how and where students can recycle, and other related topics.
Various students and organizations are currently pushing for an organic garden on campus. Students are finalizing the plan including where the garden will be located and who will care for it in the summer when students are not around. More on this project will be available in the near future.
Simpson also entered "Recycle Mania" for the first year in hopes of increasing awareness and participation in recycling among students and faculty. The EAC promoted the event across campus and pushed students to take part in the nationwide contest.
Earth Corps and the Sustainability Committee are excited to begin the implementation of hand dryers in several buildings this spring and summer. After significant research, Earth Corps students found that replacing paper towel dispensers with hand dryers could reduce carbon emissions dramatically. Now that the Sustainability Committee found an efficient hand dryer, the college is ready to invest in several models as a sample. The college will continue the project building after building in the following years.
Beginning a compost program at Simpson has been a goal for EAC since the club started. Now that students have invested research into project, the college is closer than ever.
