Study Abroad
London
Fall 2013
The faculty director of the Fall '13 London program will be Communication Studies Professor Brian Steffen, and the following courses will be offered:
- HUM 190: Introduction to British Society (CS 7, ECC: GP & OC)
- COMM 290: British Culture Studies (CS 3, ECC: CE & CT)
- COMM/HIST 290: Traditions of Freedom of Expression in Britain and the U.S. (CS 4B, ECC: HP & WC)
- An Art History course, 4 credits (CS 5, ECC: AR & WC)
- WLCS 296: Study Abroad Reflection, 2 credits
In keeping with the tradition of the Semester in London program, all of these classes help students fulfill Cornerstone requirements. The courses all will have a British theme and make use of the resources available for experiential learning in the country. Many of them will require students to put classic authors in historical context, and students will be encouraged to visit relevant sites.
As in past London semester programs, service learning activities will be made available to students, thereby giving them the opportunity to learn while serving with various non-profit organizations in London. As a result, students can come away with direct, hands-on experiences in one of the most important and fascinating urban centers of the world.
Cost of the program
To participate in the program, students pay Simpson tuition, room and board plus a program fee which will likely between $4,600-$5,100 (final cost has not yet been determined). In addition, students are also responsible for covering their air transportation costs to and from London at a cost of approximately $1,100 from Des Moines.
Requirements
Students must take and pass a one-credit hour orientation course during the spring semester preceding the semester in London. Students must also have a grade point average of at least 2.25 both at the time of application for the program, and at the time of departure in order to be able to study abroad.
To apply for admission into the program, students should submit the following items by 4:30pm on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012 to the Office of International Education (located in Maple House on North D Street, across from the BSC parking lot):
- Two copies of the completed application form
- A one to two page personal statement explaining why you're interested in this semester program and how it fits into your educational goals.
- A copy of your current degree audit.
- The names and contact information for two people who could serve as references (neither of whom are related to you and at least one should be a Simpson professor).
- A copy of the data page from your passport, if you already have it, but if you don’t already have a passport, then provide a copy of your completed passport application (with your SSN blacked out).
When you drop off your application materials, you will be asked to sign up for a 15-minute interview with the Faculty Leader and the International Education Coordinator, which will take place during the week of Oct. 29.
Students will be notified of their status in the London program during the week of Monday, Nov. 5. For those students who have been accepted into the program, they will need to go to the Simpson College Business Office by Monday, Nov. 12 and make a $200 non-refundable deposit to secure their place in the program. A second deposit payment of $300 will be due by Friday, March 8, 2013.
