Australia

Fall 2012UA campus

The faculty director for the Fall 2012 Australia program will be Biology Professor Ryan Rehmeier, and the program will be based at Simpson's partner institution, the University of Adelaide, in the state of South Australia.

NOTE:  The deadline to submit application materials for the 2012 Australia program has been extended to Friday, Nov. 11.

On the newest "Simpson Experience Abroad" semester program, students can explore the academic, social, and cultural life of Adelaide, Australia along with other Simpson students. Participants take classes alongside Australians at our partner institution, the University of Adelaide, and get a glimpse into Australian culture by living with a local host family.

The following two courses will be offered by Professor Rehmeier for all students on the program:

  • Environmental Issues in Australia and the United States (4 credits; CS 2, Tentative ECC designations: SR with OC and CT embedded skills)
  • Study Abroad Reflection (4 credits; CS 7, Tentative ECC designations: GP with WC embedded skill)

Students will also take two additional 4-credit courses of their choosing taught by faculty at the University of Adelaide.  Visit the University's "Degree Finder" to see the types of courses offered.

Cost of the program
To participate in the program, students pay Simpson tuition, room and board plus a program fee of approximately $6,000 - 6,200 (final cost has not yet been determined). In addition, students are also responsible for covering their air transportation costs to and from Adelaide at a cost of approximately $2,300 from Des Moines.

Requirements
Students must take and pass a one-credit hour orientation course during the spring semester preceding the semester in Australia. Students must also have a grade point average of at least 2.5 both at the time of application for the program, and at the time of departure in order to be able to study abroad.

To apply for admission into the program, students should submit the following items by 4:30pm on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 to the Office of International Education (located in Maple House on North D Street, across from the campus center construction site):

  • Two copies of the completed application form
  • A one to two page personal statement explaining why you're interested in this semester program and how it fits into your educational goals.
  • A copy of your current degree audit.
  • The names and contact information for two people who could serve as references (neither of whom are related to you and at least one should be a Simpson professor).
  • A copy of the data page from your passport, if you already have it, but if you don't already have a passport, then provide a copy of your completed passport application (with your SSN blacked out).
  • Proof of having made a non-refundable $200 deposit payment to the Business Office

When you drop off your application materials, you will be asked to sign up for a 15-minute interview with the Program Director and the International Education Coordinator, which will take place during the week of Nov. 7.

Students will be notified of their status in the Australia program during the week of Nov. 14, and they will be enrolled in the spring semester, 1-credit study abroad prep course taught by Professor Rehmeier.   A second deposit payment of $300 will be due by Friday, March 2, 2012.

Final program payment is due to be paid with Fall Semester tuition, room, and board during Summer 2012.
