May Term International Travel Courses

If you are a student interested in studying abroad on an
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL COURSE

during May Term,
STOP and read the following information:

In order to ensure a good match between students’ academic goals and those of their chosen travel course, Simpson College has instituted an application procedure for May Term international travel courses. Here’s what you need to do:

Select the course that best matches your interests and educational goals. To help you make this decision, speak with faculty course instructors for more information about the courses.

Review and print out the following documents related to applying for and participating in study abroad during May Term:

Complete the 1-page application form (and make an additional copy of it) and attach your 1-2 page personal statement explaining why you’re interested in this course and how it fits into your educational goals.

Print out a current copy of your degree audit.

If you already have a valid passport, make a photocopy of the data page. Remember that your passport must be valid through November 2009 (six months after your trip). If you don’t have a (valid) passport, apply for one and make a photocopy of your completed application.

Make your $200 non-refundable deposit to the Simpson College Business Office.

[The $200 deposit is non-refundable, but it is possible to get a refund if you learn that you did not get accepted into the course to which you've applied and you decide not to apply to join another course which still has space availability. Also, because of this year's current student loan shortage situation, if you need to apply for loans to help fund your travel course expenses and you learn before Oct. 20 that you are unable to secure student loan funds due to a lack of credit or a co-signor, you can apply to have your deposit money refunded to you. This refund option is being offered up until October 20 for this year only, in an effort to help students during our current student loan shortage.]

Turn in your course application form (plus the additional copy of it), personal statement, degree audit, and photocopy of your passport (or passport application), to the Office of International Education (located at 711 North D Street which is a white house on the SW corner of D and Girard Streets, across from the BSC parking lot). Applications submitted by the priority deadline of Tuesday, September 23, 2008, will be evaluated and the applicants will be notified of selection decisions by Tuesday, September 30, 2008  via email from the Office of International Education.  Applications received after the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling, space-available basis, and a decision regarding each application will be made within two weeks of receipt of all application materials. Should you not get into your preferred course, you may then apply for a second choice, as long as that course still has space. However, you may not apply for more than one course at a time.

The International Travel Course Policies document contains answers to many frequently asked questions. If you have additional questions, please contact Jay Wilkinson in the Office of International Education.
