All-College Sing 2008

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is once again hosting this annual event.  This will be the one event that everyone will want to be involved with this year and it’s being held at 8:15 pm in Great Hall on Thursday, March 27, 2008.

This is an event that has its roots buried deep in Simpson College tradition.  It’s also a chance to work with your fellow residents by getting everyone to sing and dance together, besides a great opportunity to have an excellent time!

If you don’t think that you can get a group together because of a lack of an accompanist or music director, then give us a call at 961-1637.  Phi Mu Alpha knows many talented people who are more than willing to share their skills and help you and your group out.

Basic Guidelines:

  • There will be three divisions of participation:  women, men, & mixed.  Students may group together by housing unit, housing area, or student organization.  An individual student may participate in 2 groups.
  • Each group entry must have a minimum of eight (8) members, excluding the accompanist.  There is no maximum number of contestants.
  • A time limit of eight (8) minutes will be allowed for each performing group.  For every minute or partial minute over the allotted time, the judges may subtract points.
  • Judging is based on performance, style, & “musicianship”.  Choreography is encouraged for at least one of the group’s selections, but not mandatory.  One of the group’s selections should be performed without choreography.
  • There will be winners awarded in each division as well as an award for the overall best performance.  The Best Performance Award will be $200 to the housing unit/area/student organization, a dinner for the winning participants, and the All-College Sing Trophy.  All All-College Sing participants will receive a t-shirt!!
  • Music literature will be selected by the performing group and may come from any category of music except fraternity, sorority or any other organizational songs.  The names of all songs to be performed must be registered with Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia on the registration form.  Failure to do so will result in the registration being considered void.  Titles of selection and the order of performance may not be changed after March 26, 2008.
  • Any form of accompaniment other than piano must be approved by the members of Phi Mu Alpha prior to the performance.  Accompanists may play for more than one group.  If a housing unit cannot locate an accompanist or musical director, please contact
    Zach Rohlwing (zach.rohlwing@simpson.edu)
    for assistance.

Important Dates:

  • All entries must be registered with Phi Mu Alpha by Thursday, March 6, 2008.  All entries can be sent to the Office of Student Development, BSC.
  • There will be a mandatory dress rehearsal scheduled for March 26, 2008, beginning at 8 pm in Great Hall.  Each performing group will be allowed 30 minutes to rehearse.  Failure to appear at the rehearsal that night, without prior arrangements, will result in automatic disqualification.
