Volleyball Coaches
Head
Coach - Lana Smith is in her ninth season as head volleyball coach at
Simpson and has compiled a 160-118 record (a .576 winning percentage). Smith
led the Storm to the program's first IIAC Championships since 1994 in 2006. The
Storm went on to to win the IIAC Tournament Championship and advanced to the
second round of the NCAA Tournament. Smith's teams have tied for second (2000,
2001) and tied for third (1999, 2002) in the Iowa Conference. The Storm came
from a No. 6 seed in 2005 to earn a spot in the finals of the IIAC Tournament.
In 2001, Smith earned Iowa Conference Coach of the Year honors as the Storm
ended Central's 56-match Iowa Conference winning streak. Smith served as an
assistant at Simpson in 1998. On Sept. 1, 2004, Smith was appointed to the NCAA
Division III Women's Volleyball Committee. She is serving a four-year term as a

Assistant Coach - Becca Carstensen is in her first season
as a member of the Storm coaching staff. Carstensen earned third team
All-American honors for UW-Eau Claire as a senior. She also earned
All-Conference honors as junior and as a senior for the Blugolds. As a senior,
Carstensen was named WIAC Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Assistant Coach Barb Overton begins her ninth season on the
Storm staff. Prior to joining the squad, she was head volleyball coach at
Indianola High School in 1998 where she led the Indians to a conference
championship, a regional berth and 33-9-2 record. She was also Lana Smith's
assistant for the Indians from 1990-98. Overton was the first head coach of the
Simpson softball program in 1973-74.
Assistant Coach Joel Van Roekel is in his 10th season on
the Storm staff. In addition to his varsity duties, Van Roekel is the head
junior varsity coach. A University of Northern Iowa graduate, Van Roekel
ran track for the Panthers.
