Simpson Swimming Wins First Dual Since 2004
Simpson College defeated Iowa Central Community College 152-5 in a women's swimming dual Dec. 12 in Indianola. All of the events were held the metered pool in Cowles Fieldhouse.
Chelsey Croson (Sr. Newton, Iowa, Newton H.S.) won the 100 breststroke (1:32.48) and the 400 freestyle (5:48.75). Alex Carlson (Fr., Great Bend, Kan., Great Bend H.S.) won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:26.43). Carlson was second in the 200 IM (3:03.55). Catherine Mayes (Fr., Muscatine, Iowa, Muscatine H.S.) won the 100 backstroke (1:21.36) and the the 200 IM (2:53.26). Ali Robinson (Fr., Atlantic, Iowa, Atlantic H.S.) won the 50 freestyle (:33.81) and the 100 freestyle (1:17.62). Andrea Benson (So., Conrad, Iowa, BCLUW H.S.) won the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:58.36.
Claudia Swanson (So., Fridley, Minn., Fridley H.S.) placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:31.10) and third in the 200 IM (3:07.47). Kendra Frush (Sr., Jesup, Iowa, Jesup H.S.) finished second in the 200 freestyle (3:01.70) and third in the 100 freestyle (1:21.62).
Amanda Fichter (So., Sidney, Iowa, Sidney H.S.) placed second in the 50 freestyle (:35.60) and second in the 100 freestyle (1:21.06). Stacy Sturlaugson (So., Crystal, Minn., Robbinsdale Cooper H.S.) was second in the 100 backstroke (1:23.98) and second in the 400 freestyle (6:04.21). Janie Kobylinski (Fr., Waseca, Minn., Waseca H.S.) was third in the 200 freestyle (3:03.83) and third in the 400 freestyle (6:30.85). Mackenzie Hinrichs (So., Altoona, Iowa, Southeast Polk H.S.) finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:36.30) and third in the 50 freestyle (:36.76). Morgan Umsted (Fr., Urbandale, Iowa, Indianola H.S.) was third in the 100 butterfly (2:01.94).
In the relays, the 200 "A" medley team of Mayes, Croson, Carlson, and Robinson won the race by charting a time of 2:27.69. The 200 "B" medley of Sturlaugson, Hinrichs, Fichter, and Umstead were second (2:41.58). The 400 freestyle "A" relay of Mayes, Croson, Carlson, and Robinson won the contest with a time of 5:04.69. The "B" team of Sturlaguson, Fichter, Swanson, and Frush were second (5:29.06).
The dual victory was the first for the Storm since Jan. 24, 2004 when Simpson defeated Buena Vista 114-67.
"It was great to earn our first dual win as a program in four years," said Simpson head coach Aaron Strain. "I was very pleased with our overall performance and this will provide us with great momentum as we look forward to continued success."
Simpson heads to Tampa, Fla. for a training trip Dec. 14-22 at the Treasure Island Complex. The Storm resume varsity action Jan. 10 with a dual against Coe College beginning at 12 p.m.
