Simpson wins home opener


Simpson fights off two late rallies by the visiting Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves in both games on Wednesday to win 7-6 and 5-4.

sorensenOn a cool afternoon in Indianola, Simpson jumped ahead early in the first game scoring all 7 of their runs in the first two innings. After scoring 1 run in the first inning, the Storm scored 6 runs in the bottom of the second. Jessica Barkley (Jr. Mitchellville, IA) started the bottom of the 2nd off with a triple. Next at bat, Kortney Proctor (Jr. Wilton, IA) drove Barkley in with a single, then Keri Sorensen (Fr. Bettendorf, IA) (left) went yard on the very next pitch to make the score 4-0. With the bases loaded, Allie Hock (So. Lawrence, KS) singled to the outfield and Kelsie Host, (below right) on an unbelievable effort, scored from 1st base on the play to make the score 7-0.Kelsie Host Hock was credited with 3 RBIs. Simpson spent the rest of game defending. Nebraska Wesleyan pulled to within 1 in the 7th inning but the Storm prevailed 7-6.

In the second game, Whitney Oviatt (Jr. Carnation, Washington) pitched a complete game and earned her 2nd win of the day. Oviatt struckout her 7th batter of the 2nd game on the last pitch of the evening. After Simpson jumped ahead 5-0 in the 3rd inning, Nebraska Wesleyan again came back to within 1 in the top of the 7th. With the count 2-2, Oviatt struckout Kelsey Worley of Nebraska Wesleyan for the second time to clinch the victory for Simpson 5-4.

The Storm will begin conference play this weekend in Indianola against the University of Dubuque. The double-header will start at 2 p.m. Saturday March 28, at the Simpson Softball Complex.
