Softball returns from Florida
The Storm finished in Kissimmee Florida by beating Montclair State 6-4 and dropping the second game to Rowan 3-1 on Saturday March 14. "It was a great experience down in Florida, with great weather. This was one of our tougher schedules we've had since we have been going to Kissimmee." Simpson Head Coach Henry Christowski said after the team returned to Indianola. "We had a lot of quality performances from a lot of different players, and overall I am very pleased with our performance and we feel ready to start the conference schedule."
The Storm will return to action on Saturday March 21, in St. Louis (Mo.) in the Marriott West Tournament. Simpson will play Maryville at 10:00 a.m. in the first game and Augustana (Ill) in the second game on Saturday.
Friday March 13:
Simpson started Friday beating Hunter College 5-0, then dropped the second game to Mt. Union 0-1. Against Hunter College, the Storm totaled 5 runs off 8 hits. Kelsie Host (So. Altoona, IA) tripled for an RBI and Taylor Finch (So. Grinnell, IA) earned 2 hits. Whitney Oviatt and Kelsey Knutson combined for a 1 hitter, and the shutout. In the second game against Mt. Union, Kelsie Host had another triple going 2-3 at the plate. Mt. Union held on for the 1-0 victory. Simspon continues at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee Florida Saturday, March 14. In the first game Simpson will play Montclair St. at 3 p.m. (EST) and Rowan at 5 p.m. (EST).
Thursday March 12:
After a well deserved rest on Wednesday, the Storm softball team returned to action on Thursday (March 12) against Mt. Union and Wittenberg. Simpson beat Mt. Union in the first game 3-0. Iowa Intercollegiate Conference Player of the week Whitney Oviatt (Jr. Carnation, WA) had five K's en route to a two hitter. Keri Sorensen (Fr. Bettendorf, IA) accounted for 2 of Simpson's three runs on a 5th inning single. Against Wittenberg Veronica Roshek (Fr. Urbandale, IA), Amanda Enochs (So. Des Moines, IA), and Carlye Owens (Sr. Norwalk, IA) all had RBI's as Simpson beat Wittenberg 3-0. The Storm will play Hunter College at 9:00 a.m. (EST) and Mt. Union at 11:00 a.m. (EST) on Friday March 13.
Tuesday, March 10
Simpson beat Lake Forest Tuesday (March 10) 7-0. Whitney Oviatt (Jr. Carnation, WA) struckout 10 batters pitching a 4 hitter. Kelsie Host (So. Altoona, IA) went 2-3 and 2 RBIs. In the second game, Thomas More beat the Storm 5-2. Simpson had 2 runs off 8 hits, while Thomas More had 5 runs off 5 hits. Kelsie Host went 3-4 at the plate batting .741 for the day. Simpson continues action Thursday March 12 down in Kissimmee against Mt. Union 3 p.m. (EST) and Wittenberg 5 p.m. (EST).
Monday March 9:
Simpson lost their first game Monday at the Rebel Games to Hiram 5-1. The Storm had 1 run off 5 hits while Hiram had 5 runs off 5 hits. In the second game, Transylvania beat the Storm 2-0. The Storm had 3 hits and 1 error and Transylvania had 2 runs off 7 hits. Simpson continues action on Tuesday March 10, against Lake Forest 9:00 a.m. (EST) and Thomas More 11:00 a.m. (EST).
Sunday March 8:
With two wins on Saturday (March, 7) the Storm beat Benedictine and Mt. St. Joseph on Sunday to start the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee Florida 4-0.
After a scoreless seven innings in the first game against Benedictine, Simpson scored 4 runs in the 8th to beat Benedictine 4-0. Whitney Oviatt (Jr. Carnation, WA) struckout 6 batters on her way to a 3 hitter. Simpson totaled 11 hits and 1 error. Veronica Roshek (Fr. Urbandale, IA) went 2-2 at the plate with 2 RBIs. Keri Sorensen (Fr. Bettendorf, IA) and Sidney Ridout (Fr. Indianola, IA) both added 2 hits.
Simpson didn't need their final at bat in the second game after scoring 5 runs in the 1st inning. Mt. St. Joseph scored 1 run in the final inning but the game was never in doubt as Simpson beat Mt. St. Joseph 5-1 to close out the weekend. The storm committed no errors and tallied 8 hits. In just 4 innings Kelsey Knutson (So. St. Charles, IA) struckout 10 batters. Jessica Hartgers (Jr. Colfax, IA) came in the 5th inning. The Simpson pitching staff gave up just 2 hits against Mt. St. Joseph. Keri Sorensen (Fr. Bettendorf, IA) added 2 hits and 1 RBI. Simpson will return to action tomorrow (March 9) in Kissimmee Florida at 9:00 a.m. (EST) against Hiram College and Transylvania at 1:00 (EST).
Saturday March 7:
The Storm Women's softball team started quickly on Saturday defeating Webster (MO) 10-0 in their first game Saturday in Kissimmee Florida. Simpson's Whitney Oviatt (Jr. Carnation, WA) struck out 12 batters while giving up just 1 hit. Keri Sorensen (Fr. Bettendorf, IA) went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and Jessica Barkley (Jr. Mitchellville, IA) also went 2 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBIs.
In the second game on Saturday, Oviatt pitched another shutout against Aurora, striking out 4 batters. Kortney Proctor (Jr. Wilton, IA) knocked a 3 run homer in the 4th inning en route to a 5-0 victory over Aurora. Oviatt struck out 16 batters in two games on Saturday.
