Athlete Spotlight - Heather Akes
Position: Defense
High School and Hometown: Southeast Polk High School, Runnells, Iowa
Honors: All Conference, letterwinner
Apart from her starting role on the Simpson women's soccer team, junior Heather Akes has another hobby.
Akes is a world champion horse shower and has been showing horses since she was 3-years old. Influenced by her mom, Akes began attending open shows around her hometown.
Eventually this hobby turned into a lifestyle, and Akes now shows Quarter horses around the country.
"I have shown in Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio and Nebraska," said Akes. "I show every weekend in the summer, and sometimes I'll be gone for weeks at a time. During the school year it is about two weekends a month until about April when it picks up a lot."
Since she started about 17 years ago, Akes has won more than 50 circuit and high point championships. She also won the National Snaffle Bit Association World Show in 2007. Akes has no urge to stop and said she will continue to show until she is no longer able.
