Women’s Golf in Third after Second Round

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Sept. 26, 2009) – Megan Smith (Sr., Eagle Grove, Iowa) came alive on day two of the 2009 Iowa Conference Women’s Golf Championship, carding a team-best 77 in helping Simpson hold its grip on third place after the first weekend of the tournament at Pheasant Ridge Golf Club.

Simpson remained in third after two rounds of the four-round championship, shaving 13 strokes off its day one total with a 322 Saturday, giving the Storm a two-day total of 657. Simpson increased its lead over fourth-place Luther from two strokes to 12, and sits 30 strokes behind second-place Central. Wartburg leads the team competition with a 625, two strokes in front of the Dutch.

Smith, who shot an 83 on Friday, catapulted herself from a tie for 12th after the first day to a tie for fifth at the completion of the second day of competition. Smith’s 77 is one off her season-low round of 76, which she achieved at the Division III Midwest Classic Sept. 20.

Katie Vaux (Sr., Union Iowa) moved up the leaderboard on day two as well, finding two more shots Saturday in finishing the round with a 80. Vaux sits in a tie for eighth after a 162 two-round total.

Taylor Hillery (So., Dubuque, Iowa) tied Vaux with an 80 on Saturday, giving her a 163 after two rounds and putting her in a tie for 10th place. Chelsea Manny (Peru, Iowa) and Kayla Miller (Jr., Odebolt, Iowa) find themselves locked in a five-way tie for 22nd after shooting 177 on the weekend.

The Iowa Conference Championship concludes next weekend, Oct. 2-3 at Oneota Golf and Country Club in Decorah.
