Simpson College opened its Iowa Conference baseball series against Cornell College with a 16-2 victory over the Rams Mar. 28 in Mt. Vernon. The Storm invoked the 10-run mercy rule with an eight-run outburst in the top of the eighth.

Cory Dawson (Jr., Altoona, Iowa, Southeast Polk H.S.) led the 14-hit attack with a 3-for-4 performance. Chris Jones (Jr., Germantown, Wis., Germantown H.S.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI's. Beau Kaplan (So., Ankeny, Iowa, North Polk H.S.) was 2-for-4 with three RBI's and three runs scored. Jason McClaflin(Sr., Altoona, Iowa, Southeast Polk H.S.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Trent Kain (Sr., Prairie City, Iowa, Prairie City-Monroe H.S.) tossed a four-hitter. Kain struck out seven.

The Simpson College (11-7, 4-2 IIAC) pitching staff allowed seven hits in two games as the Storm completed a series sweep of Cornell College (4-5, 0-3 IIAC) Mar. 29 in Mt. Vernon. Jared Sass (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, City H.S.) tossed a four-hitter in game No. 1 as the Storm defeated the Rams 6-2. Simpson tied the game at two in the sixth, with the Storm scoring four runs in the top of the seventh for the final advantage.

Dave Johnson (Fr., West Des Moines, Iowa, Valley H.S.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Kaplan was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Jake Ritchey (Sr., Indianola, Iowa, I-35 H.S.) limited Cornell to three hits the Storm won game two 8-1. Ritchey struck out six and walked only one along the way. Ritchey lowered his season ERA to a team leading 0.79 with his performance. The Storm scored four runs in the third, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth. Jesse Reis (Jr., Coon Rapids, Iowa, Coon Rapids-Bayard H.S.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI’s to pace the Storm. Jones was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s. McClaflin, Curt Bjork (Jr., Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Mt. Vernon H.S.), and Johnson each posted two hits.

The Storm head back into Iowa Conference action Tuesday afternoon when the Storm host Luther College in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
