Track and Field Coaches

Head Coach Dave ClevelandHead Coach - Dave Cleveland is in his fourth season as head men's and women's track coach at Simpson. Since taking over the Storm, Cleveland's athletes have earned seven All-American certificates and qualified for nationals 15 times. 13 times Simpson athletes have won Iowa Conference championships while the Storm have earned 44 All-Conference certificates. During Cleveland's tenure, 21 school records have fallen.

Cleveland came to Simpson after serving as the head boys' track coach at Cedar Falls High School from 1994-2005. Cleveland led Cedar Falls to top five finishes at the 1998, 2004 and 2005 state track meets. He was named Mississippi Valley Conference Coach of the Year four times (1998-99, 2000, 2002) and was named Iowa Association of Track Coaches Regional Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999. While at Cedar Falls, Cleveland was a biology teacher and also served as the fall strength and conditioning coach (1994-2005), assistant varsity boys' basketball coach (1994-2001) and assistant varsity football coach (1994-95). Cleveland moved to Cedar Falls from Webster City High School where he was the head girls' track coach from 1990-94. He led Webster City to four straight conference championships from 1990-94. Cleveland is a 1990 graduate of University of Northern Iowa where he was a three-time Missouri Valley Conference High Jump Champion (1988-90) and a five-time Academic All-Conference selection. Cleveland received his master's degree from Viterbo University (Wisc.) in 2001.

Chris CunninghamAssistant Coach Chris Cunningham

Chris Cunningham is in her second season as a member of the Simpson staff. A 1992 Simpson graduate, Cunningham (nee Wickering), was a three-time NCAA Division III Championships qualifier, earning All-American honors in 1991 with a 20th place showing. She earned All-Region honors in 1988 and 1991. Cunningham was the first Simpson cross country runner to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. Cunningham became the first Simpson runner to ever win an Iowa Conference individual cross country championship, posting the honor in 1988. She was also named Iowa Conference MVP in 1988. Cunningham earned All-Conference honors a total of four times, coming in fourth as a junior and as a senior and seventh as a sophomore.

As a member of the Simpson track and field team, Cunningham won the 10,000m at the Iowa Conference Outdoor Championships as a sophomore, junior and as a senior. She also won the 5,000m at the Iowa Conference Outdoor Championships as a junior. Cunningham has served as head cross country coach at Clear Lake and Osage High Schools as well as an assistant cross country coach at Knoxville High School. She has also served as head girls’ track and field coach at Clear Lake High School.

Brad HoferAssistant Coach Brad Hofer

Brad Hofer is in his sixth season as a member of the Simpson staff. Hofer has worked with the Storm track teams for four seasons. Hofer earned All-American honors on two occasions in the distance medley and 4x400m relay for Wartburg College. He was a multi-time national qualifier in cross country and on Wartburg's 4x400m relay team. He also serves as head men's and women's cross country coach at Simpson.

Assistant Coach Britta Wey

Britta WeyBritta Wey is in her second season as an assistant coach at Simpson. Wey (nee Johnson) is a 2007 Simpson graduate where she was a four-year letterwinner in track and three-year letterwinner in cross country. Wey earned All-Conference honors as a senior in the 4x400m relay at the IIAC Indoor Championships and at the IIAC Outdoor Championships.

Assistant Coach Krystal Berger

Krystal BergerKrystal Berger is in her first season as an assistant coach at Simpson College. Berger will work with the sprinters and jumpers. Berger lettered for the Storm three times (2005-06, 2008), competing primarily in the short sprints and jumps.

Assistant Coach Kelsey Hagerty

Kelsey HagertyKelsey Hagerty is in her first season as an assistant coach at Simpson College. Hagerty will work with the Storm throwers. Hagerty lettered for the Storm as a thrower from 2004-07. Hagerty is the school record holder in the javelin (157-4). She earned Outdoor All-American honors for Simpson at the 2007 NCAA Division III Championships with a seventh place finish. Hagerty won two outdoor conference championships (2005-javelin, 2007-shot put) during her career. She also earned All-Conference honors in the outdoor shot put (2007, third). Hagerty also lettered three times for the Simpson volleyball team.

Assistant Coach Kat Fenneman

Kat FennemanKat Fenneman is in her first season as an assistant coach at Simpson College. She will work primarily with the pole vaulters. Fenneman lettered for the Storm from 2003-06. She is the school record holder in the indoor pole vault (10-0) and co-holds the school record for the outdoor pole vault (9-6 1/4).
