Simpson Men's Track Team Wins Four Times At Hilltop Open

Eric PattenThe Simpson College men's track and field teams posted four victories at the Cornell College Hilltop Open Feb. 7 in Mt. Vernon. There were no team scores.

Eric Patten (Jr., Webb, Iowa, Sioux Central H.S.) won the 800m in a time of 2:00.00.

Marty Rounds (Jr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jefferson H.S.) earned first place in the 55m hurdles with a time of :7.90. Rounds later finished seventh in the 200m (:23.32).

The 4x400m relay of Kyle Yarkosky (Jr., Albia, Iowa, Albia H.S.), Rounds, Legrand Bien-Aime (Jr., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Stranahan H.S.), and Patten were first as the squad posted a time of 3:27.71.

The distance medley relay of Matt Stone (Fr., Boone, Iowa, Boone H.S.), Thomas Cotter (Jr., Kansas City, Mo., Rockhurst H.S.), Louis Elbert (So., Indianola, Iowa, Indianola H.S.), and Patten won the event by posting a time of 10:41.86.

Zach Smith (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., CBC H.S.) finished second in the long jump (22-4 ¼), fourth in the triple jump (43-3 ¾), and fifth in the 200m (:23.21).

Eric Osterhaus (Sr., Waterville, Iowa, Waukon H.S.) and Ryan Edwardson (Fr., Spencer, Iowa ,Spencer H.S.) were third and fourth respectively in the 3000m. Osterhaus finished third in a time of 9:08.98 while Edwardson posted a 9:16.21 performance.

Rory Hennessy (Fr., Dysart, Iowa, Union H.S.) was third in the shot put (46-8 ¾).  Scott Danielson (Jr.,Dayton, Iowa, Southeast Webster-Grand H.S.) finshed fourth in the shot put (46-4 ¾).
Yarkosky placed fourth in the 400m (:52.03).  Nick Wilson (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa, Saydel H.S.) placed fourth in the 55m hurdles (:8.44).

Wardell Watkins (Jr., Olathe, Kan., Northwest H.S.) was fifth in the long jump (21-11 3/4) and fifth in the long jump (41-11 ½). John Wardenburg (Jr., Williamsburg, Iowa, Williamsburg H.S.) finished sixth in the shot put (45-4 ½).  Luke Weber (So., Waukon, Iowa, Allamakee H.S.) finished sixth in the 3000m (9:21.93).  Tyler Jordison (Jr., Ft. Dodge, Iowa, Ft. Dodge H.S.) was eighth in the 800m (4:37.30).

"It is exciting to see how well the teams are coming together," said Simpson head coach Dave Cleveland.  "I'm very pleased with the work ethic, attitude, and level of performance thus far.  I feel that we have made a lot of progress after not completing for two weeks.  The success that we enjoyed at this meet should gives us some momentum as we move forward.  I'm really proud of our kids."
