Hastings Defeats Simpson 5-4 In Spring Tennis Opener

Noah SaundersHastings College (1-0) defeated Simpson College (0-3) 5-4 in the opening dual of the 2009 Spring season Feb. 8 in Red Oak, Iowa. Hastings won 2-of-3 doubles matches with Noah Saunders (So., Norwalk, Iowa, Norwalk H.S.) and Kyle Shilling (So., Knoxville, Iowa, Knoxville H.S.) winning at No. 2 doubles over Chris Ondrey and Joe Bliven by a 8-4 count.

Saunders (No. 3), Shilling (No. 4), and Adam Summitt (Fr., No. 5, Urbandale, Iowa, Johnston H.S.) won in singles. With the match tied 4-4, Daniel Schneider (Fr., Ft. Madision, Iowa, Ft. Madison H.S.) battled back from a 2-6, 2-5 deficit against Ondrey to make it 4-5 in the second set. Ondrey earned the victory for both himself and Hastings by winning the second set 6-4.

"(Hastings) was a tough lost to take," said Simpson head coach Daniel Finn. "We didnt lose due to any lack of effort or heart, even though we lost, I am very proud of my (team). We will put the lost behind us and go back to the drawing board to get ready for our next match at Storm Lake."

Simpson resumes action Thursday when the Storm play two matches at Buena Vista. The Storm take on Dordt and Buena Vista beginning at 1 p.m.
