Athlete Spotlight - John Richter

John RichterHigh School and Hometown: GMG High School, Marshalltown, Iowa

Growing up on a golf course in Virginia sparked junior John Richter's interest in the sport.

"My dad would take me out in the evenings and we would play three or four holes," said Richter. "I really got into it and have been playing ever since."

Because Richter's father was in the military, he moved around a lot. His family eventually ended up in Iowa, where Richter graduated from high school.

Richter admits that he has heard more than once that golf is not a difficult sport, but he disagrees.

"Golf isn't as easy as stepping up and hitting a ball into a hole," he said. "It takes a lot of physical and mental fitness. Good players take care of their bodies and have great muscle memory to control their swing."

Along with being on the golf team, Richter is majoring in athletic training and hopes to go into the profession of physical therapy.
