Reutzel Rushes For 147; Storm Fall 20-17 To Coe

Adam Reutzel rushed for over 100's for the fifth straight game.Elliott Rausa’s 45-yard field goal with 56 seconds remaining lifted Coe College (2-3, 2-1 IIAC) past Simpson College (3-2, 1-2 IIAC) 20-17 in Iowa Conference football action Oct. 4 in Indianola.   Adam Reutzel (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Prairie H.S.) inched closer to the Simpson career rushing record as he went over 100 yards for the fifth straight week.  Reutzel rushed 24 times for 147 yards to raise his career total to 3,101 yards.  Ricky Gales (1988-89) holds the school record with 3,326.

"No doubt it's a tough loss,” said Simpson head coach Jim Glogowski.  “I told the kids at the end of the game we got to come out ready to go off the bat instead of finding ourselves down 14-0.  It was pretty much a slugfest. Give Coe credit, they bounced back from a tough game last we and came in here and played hard. We knew they would, we knew they're a good football team. I think we are still a good football team.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Kyle Polich gave the Kohawks the lead when returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown.    Coe took a 14-0 lead at the 5:09 mark when Sam Hammes caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from CJ Feller.   The Kohawks were driving late in the second quarter when John Wolfe John Wolfe intercepted a pass and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown.(Jr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Lincoln H.S.) intercepted a Feller pass and took it back 62 yards for a touchdown.   Reutzel capped off a 16-play, 84-yard drive late in the third quarter with a nine-yard touchdown run to tie the game.

The Storm fumbled on their own 12 early in the fourth quarter to give the Kohawks the ball in the red zone.  Four rushing attempts advanced the ball to the Storm one.  On third and goal, Feller was sacked by Cody Jensen (Jr., Grinnell, Iowa, Grinnell H.S.) for a loss of eight yards.  Rausa kicked a 20-yard field goal to give Coe a 17-14 lead.  Simpson mounted a 10-play, 53-yard drive on the ensuing kickoff which culminated in a James Gale (Fr., Waukee, Iowa, Waukee H.S.) 31-yard field goal.  Coe got the ball back at their own 20.  The Kohawks advanced the ball to the Storm nine where an illegal block penalty pushed the ball back to the Storm 24.  Two plays later, Coe was called for a holding penalty which again moved Coe back, this time to the Simpson 29.   The Kohawks pushed the ball back to the Storm 27 where Rausa was able to connect on the decisive field goal.

Simpson got the ball back with 48 seconds remaining but Polich made his second interception of the game to secure the victory for Coe.   Reutzel also caught one pass for three yards and tallied a 39.8 yard punt average.  Tad Stoner (Sr., Carlisle, Iowa, Carlisle H.S.) caught six passes for 60 yards.  Tim Stover (Sr., Muscatine, Iowa, Muscatine H.S.) made a game high 15 tackles.  In addition to his sack, Jensen posted 10 tackles, 1.5 for a loss.  Zach Smith (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., CBC H.S.) and Antonio Neal (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Ritenour H.S.) each made eight tackles for the Storm.

Simpson heads to Cornell College next week for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

"I thought defensively as a whole we played pretty well,” Glogowski said.  “For the most part we were pretty solid and played really hard. That's the thing that keeps coming back to me is that they're playing really hard. I think they rose and up played hard. I think we had some opportunities to make a stand at home. We gave up 13 points so that's solid but we didn't score enough.  "The thing about Adam is (that) he's the kind of kid you don't think has that many yards, then you turn around and he's got 150 yards.  "That was a big time play that John (Wolfe) made (in the first half)."

"I think the thing was we got off to a little slow start running the football and i thought we picked it up in the second half which i was really proud of our effort,” Glogowski continued.  “For us it's the ability to come out of the gate faster. The two games we lost this year we both came out and started slow. So as coaches, we've got to figure out how we can get them to come out faster.  We just got to rebound and put this one away and get back at Cornell next week."
