Reutzel's Three Touchdowns Lead Simpson Past Grand View 38-21
Adam Reutzel (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Prairie H.S.) tied his career high with three rushing touchdowns as Simpson College opened the 2008 football season with a 38-21 victory over Grand View
College (1-1) Sept. 6 in Indianola. The 5-11 athletic training major tallied 21 carries for 115 yards, marking the ninth time in his career that the tailback has gone over the 100-yard mark in a single game. Senior quarterback Travis Dietz (Indianola, Iowa, Indianola H.S.) completed 8-of-12 pass attempts for 147 yards and one touchdown while rushing 10 times for 37 yards and a TD. Preseason All-American linebacker Tim Stover (Sr., Muscatine, Iowa, Muscatine H.S.) made nine tackles, forced one fumble, and broke up one pass. The victory was the first for new Storm head coach Jim Glogowski.
"It feels great. I'm proud of the kids, they played their tails off,” Glogowski said.
Simpson won the toss and deferred. On the second play of the game, Antonio Neal (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Ritenour H.S.) forced the first of what would be five Vikings’ fumbles on the day when he knocked the ball away from Russ Hein. Zach Smith (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., CBC H.S.) picked the ball up and returned it to the Grand View 16. On the very next play, Reutzel scored his first touchdown of the day. The Vikings would tie the score later in the first quarter when Gregory Charles scored on a seven yard touchdown run. Reutzel put the Storm back up 14-7 on the next Simpson possession when he capped of a nine-play, 82-yard scoring drive with a nine yard TD run. Taking advantage of a short Grand View punt, Simpson mounted another nine play drive, this time Reutzel scored from one yard out to make it 21-7. A James Gale (Fr., Waukee, Iowa, Waukee H.S.) 22-yard field goal with 3:51 remaining to give Simpson a 17-point advantage. The Vikings scored at the halftime buzzer when Drey Porter caught a seven yard touchdown pass from Durran Starks and cut the Storm lead to 24-14.
Simpson took the opening kick of the second half and marched down the field on an 11-play, 60-yard drive that was capped off by Dietz who rushed in for his touchdown from the one-yard line. Tad Stoner (Sr., Carlisle, Iowa, Carlisle H.S.) caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Dietz with 4:19 to go in the third quarter. Catarino Cantu capped off the scoring for the Vikings when he rushed for a one-yard touchdown with 22 seconds remaining in the game. Reutzel led a Storm rushing attack that outgained Grand View 181-168 on the ground. In addition to causing five fumbles (two of which the Storm recovered), the Simpson defense made two interceptions including a John Wolfe (Jr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Lincoln H.S.) pick that he returned 70 yards in the second quarter. The Storm tallied seven tackles for a loss and made two sacks during the day. Cody Jensen (Jr., Grinnell, Iowa, Grinnell H.S.) made seven tackles (two for a loss) and recorded one sack.
“We had a little adversity on a touchdown right before halftime but the kids came back after halftime and did a great job," Glogowski said. "I tell you what, he's (Adam Reutzel) a tough kid. He runs so hard. The biggest thing I told the kids what we need to come out in the second half and respond and we did. I thought we moved the ball several times a long ways. There's some odds and ends we need to clean up but I was pretty happy overall with their effort. "We were very opportunistic (on defense), we got some interceptions and got some fumbles. To be up 7-0 thirty seconds into the game, you got to feel pretty good about that. We didn't get panicked. We played pretty vanilla defense which is what we want to do. We made some basic calls and let our kids play and that's what happened."
Glogowski is the first Simpson head coach to win his debut since 1979 when an Alex Glann led Simpson team defeated St. Ambrose 52-0. Simpson heads to St. Paul, Minn. next Saturday when the Storm take on Northwestern College. It is a renewal of a series that has been dormant since 1989 when Simpson defeated the Eagles 56-12. The Storm have won both career meetings against Northwestern.
"We'll go back to business on Tuesday but we'll enjoy this one tonight,” Glogowski said. “Tomorrow we'll watch the film and put it away. Whether you win or lose, you always want to put that away. Hopefully no matter what the situation is, we're always able to put this behind us and go into next week whether we win or lose and try to get better. They always say you make the most improvement from your first to your second game so hopefully we can obviously improve a lot heading into next week."
