Athlete Spotlight - Matt Gilbert
Guard
High School and Hometown: East High School, Waterloo, Iowa
As a student-athlete Matt Gilbert has learned a lot: how to communicate and work within a team, how to lead and motivate others and how to overcome difficult obstacles.
Gilbert knew he would benefit from playing basketball at Simpson.
“I thought basketball would help keep me focused and get me through tough days,” he said. “I like being part of a team.”
Though Gilbert felt a little like an outsider when he first arrived on campus, he said everyone at Simpson has made him feel welcome and comfortable.
He has many funny stories from when the team hangs out. His favorite story is about the time one former player chased—and caught—a mouse loose in the gym.
“It was my first time seeing a 6’8” guy chase and catch a mouse,” he said. “He was zigzagging around the gym. It helped me realize why we run so many line drills.”
