Like many Simpson students, junior Andrew Dau goes to the Iowa State Fair every summer. However, his reason for attending might be a little different than most.
Dau has been working on producing a vegetable garden at his home for eight years. He placed first at the fair in the FFA horticulture exhibit in 2006 and 2007, and his garden has been featured in a video on Iowa Public Television.
"Gardening is very relaxing," said Dau. "It's fun to see a small seed turn into some amazing produce. It's something I will probably do for the rest of my life."
In addition to gardening, Dau is passionate about playing basketball for the Storm. Dau grew up watching his sisters play sports and, starting his career on a Little Tykes hoop at the age of four, eventually decided he liked basketball the most.
"I love the competition," he said. "It gives me an opportunity to go out and compete with other people. It something that keeps challenging me, and I enjoy pursing and reaching my goals."
