Sociology Major
Sociology is concerned with the nature and workings of human group life. At Simpson, the sociology major is designed to give students an in depth look at these complex issues. Students acquire, organize, analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative data. All sociology majors apply knowledge in at least one field experience or internship. Options for students after graduation include general education, teaching at the secondary level, employment in the public or private sector or preparation for graduate study in sociology, anthropology, social work, theology or law.
Criminal Justice Major
Simpson has one of the premier criminal justice programs in the Midwest. Students are offered excellent academic preparation for employment in the criminal justice system. Students can select an academic concentration within the major including justice, administration or corrections. Simpson’s program blends the theoretical and applied aspects of the criminal justice system and is strengthened by educational internships and field experience programs. This program enables students to pursue various career paths including graduate or law school, law enforcement, probation and parole and social work.
Social Work Minor
The minor in social work prepares students for jobs in human services and/or for master's level graduate study. Students will explore how the social environment affects human behavior, and they closely examine the operation of the human service system in the United States. Students will develop their skills in counseling and consider various strategies for problem-solving in specific situations. Seniors complete a Field Practicum in which they apply their knowledge in a closely-supervised job internship. The Social Work Minor fits well with majors in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, and other disciplines. Former minors are currently working in areas such as family crisis intervention, youth counseling, among many others
