How are new students assigned to housing?
Room and roommate assignments are based on a variety of factors including the deposit date, the date the completed Housing Application is received, the information on the application, input from Admission staff as well as the needs of the department. If a new student wishes to room with someone specific, both persons must mutually request each other on the Housing application. Several of the Greek housing units are college-owned, and therefore, new students may be assigned to a Greek housing unit. This does not mean that you are expected to affiliate with that chapter. If you are assigned to one of these spaces, you may have the opportunity to relocate following rush, or you may stay in this assignment until a later point in the year. If you know that you are interested in becoming involved with the Greek system, you may state a preference for being assigned to one of these locations on your Housing Application.
Are there times when I won't be allowed to stay in my room?
Your contract is for the use of your room for the dates specified on the residence agreement and assignment. Certain dates and periods during the academic year are excluded from this agreement (fall, Thanksgiving, winter and spring recesses.) You are expected to vacate college housing during these periods, unless you reside in a theme house. If you desire to be allowed to remain in college housing during these recess periods, and you are not required to be on campus for an approved college activity, you will be assessed about ten dollars ($10) per night for the length of your stay. Permission to remain on campus must be approved in advance by the Director of Residence Life. Regardless of where you reside, if you are staying during a break period you must inform the Department of Residence Life. For all the relevant break dates, click Important Dates.
What do I need to know about moving in?
We want you to feel like your room is your home. It will reflect your own individuality and need. Simpson provides the necessary appointments to ensure your convenience, safety and comfort. You provide those touches that make your room a home. You will bring your own bed linens (all mattresses are 80") and blankets, pillows, towels, study lamp, hangers, wastebasket, alarm clock, telephone and personal necessities. Some other items you may wish to consider bringing would be posters, plants, computer, stereo, TV, etc. It is a good idea to talk about such items with your roommate(s) so as to avoid duplication and storage concerns.
What do I need to know about phone calls?
Local telephone service to your room is provided. Students provide their own phone. The college provides a long distance calling access code for you at your request. Calls made under this access code will be charged to your student account. You may also wish to consider bringing a calling card or using other long distance calling programs if you desire. The phone number issued to you by the College stays with throughout your Simpson residency. For more information visit Information Services.
Can I ship items to myself before I arrive?
If you need to ship belongings to Simpson prior to your arrival, you may do so. Such shipments should be addressed to yourself, c/o Simpson College.
Can I bring my pet?
Residence halls are not appropriate living spaces for most pets. Pets are not allowed with the exception of fish in a maximized tank size of 10-gallons. Please refer to the Residence Hall handbook for more information.
What should I bring?
Bring items you feel are indispensable or that you know you will use. In other words, pack your clothes and clock radio before you load up your stamp collection. Do remember you will have a roommate and he or she will need to fit in the room too! You may want to talk with your roommate(s) before you come to Simpson to see what essentials each of you is bringing. In August, before classes begin, you'll receive by mail your roommate's name and phone number, so you can touch base before you arrive on campus. A few things you won't have to worry about because Simpson will provide them for you. Read on! You supply: Anything from plants, posters, photos of your friends and family, a TV, CD collection and stereo. All rooms are furnished with dressers, desks, chairs and beds. You may choose a single or bunk bed provided by the College. Be sure to bring your own linens, towels, pillows and blankets. For in-room munching, you can bring a microwave. Do NOT bring appliances that have an open heating element, such as toaster ovens or hot plates. The residence halls have microwaves and kitchens with ovens for students' use. You can bring your own refrigerator if it is 4.3 cubic feet or less. You may also want to bring: shower buckets (to haul shampoo, soap, etc. to the restroom); stamps; rolls of quarters (so you don't have to bring mountains of laundry home with you on your breaks); alarm clock; photos of friends; posters; the sticky stuff for hanging things on your walls (the kind made especially to be removed later); at least one plate, bowl and plastic cup with a spoon, fork and knife set; water bottle; can opener; needle and thread; scissors and tape; stapler; dictionary and thesaurus; robe; study lamp; wastebasket; laundry bag or basket; clothes hangers; surge protectors; a fan; a deck of cards; a camera; and a diary or journal. You can read some hints and tips about decorating your new home by visiting the Residence Life Handbook section on Your New Home.
What about Internet, Phones, and Cable TV?
Every residence hall room at Simpson is linked to Ethernet, giving you access to the colorful World Wide Web, the Internet and computer databases around the globe, via Internet Explorer. Using your own computer you'll be able to complete assignments, produce presentations, explore information resources and communicate with other computer users on campus and worldwide. All residence hall rooms are wired for cable TV, too, so you'll receive basic service that includes CNN and Simpson-operated channels. HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and other pay cable channels are available for a monthly charge and installation fee. For phoning home or calling on campus, every room has a touch-tone telephone jack which is linked to Simpson's telecommunications system. You must provide your own touch tone phone and plug it into the "A" jack of your room/apartment. Personal authorization codes are given to any student by request from Information Services so they can make long distance calls, which are then billed to their Simpson accounts. The telephone system also features PhoneMail, a voicemail system that lets you leave messages for and receive them from friends and family. Feel free to bring an answering machine with your phone. Just set it to pick up before the Simpson voicemail system. For more information about connecting to the campus network, telephones, or cable television, visit Information Services.
