Janet S. Everhart is Assistant Professor of Religion with a specialization in biblical studies. Her doctoral research explored the role of eunuchs in the Hebrew Bible and in cultures of the ancient Near East. During the seventeen years between graduate degrees, Everhart served as a pastor in the California-Nevada Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Everhart’s leadership in the church includes election as a clergy delegate to the 1988 and 1992 General and Jurisdictional Conferences, membership on the denomination’s General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, and chairing district committees on ordained ministry as well as her conference Board of Pensions and conference Clergywomen’s Steering committee.
Dr. Everhart’s growing interest in adult Bible study as a parish pastor led to the study of Greek and Hebrew and eventually to a Ph.D. program in biblical studies. During her doctoral studies, she worked as a hospital chaplain in a busy Level One Trauma Center in Denver, Colorado; she also taught Hebrew to seminary students at Iliff School of Theology. After completing her Ph.D., Dr. Everhart came to Simpson to direct the college’s Lilly Initiative for Vocational Exploration; as a faculty member in the religion department, she continues to play an active role in the Initiative.
Dr. Everhart’s publications include articles and book chapters on subjects ranging from biblical studies to the history of women in American Methodism. She is currently writing a chapter for an edited three volume series on feminist biblical interpretation. An active member of the Society of Biblical Literature, she has presented papers at national and regional meetings and is frequently a guest preacher, speaker, and workshop leader, particularly in Iowa and California. Helping young adults discover the richness of the Bible, watching them learn biblical languages, and encouraging them to “put feet to their faith” are among Dr. Everhart’s passions.
