John H. Bolen - Assistant Professor of Religion

Registrar & Associate Academic Dean

B.A., Culver-Stockton College, 1971
M.Div., Christian Theological Seminary, 1975
D.Min., University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, 1985
Ph.D., Iowa State University, 1994

John Bolen’s first career was in pastoral ministry, where he served in a specialized area of working with smaller churches with promise.  In preparing for that ministry, he was introduced to the works of John Cobb, David Griffith, and Alfred North Whitehead.  This introduction to Process Thought spurred an interest that led him to continue his studies in theology and philosophy at the University of Dubuque and the University of Iowa.  He continued his degree at Iowa by transferring to Iowa State University and studying the philosophy of education.  The whole concept of Process Thought led to an interest in Faith Development studies, and there was a study going on at ISU concerning James Fowler’s work.  He completed his studies at ISU by writing my dissertation on “The Faith Development of Traditional College Students at a Christian College.”  His interest in Process Thought has led to a greater interest in the study of Logic and Physics.
