Emily Skow

Dr. Emily Skow You may have seen M.C. Escher’s impossible figures and wondered why our visual systems are tricked by the illusion. After the umpteenth time you’ve misplaced your keys you might evaluate the best way of searching for them.  Or perhaps you noticed that you had no trouble identifying which stripes belonged to which of two zebras sidled up next to one another at a recent trip to the zoo. My passion is understanding the processes which underlie all the above examples. We, as human beings, are often tricked into believing that visual perception is instantaneous, seamless, simple, and direct because that seems to be our experience, but research has shown that the story is not quite that simple. Ask me all about it and I’ll probably tell you much more than you ever wanted to know.
This year I am excited to be a new Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology. Among the courses I will teach are Introductory Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Sensation and Perception, Vision: Science and Art. I am excited to help students “get their hands dirty” developing their own research projects and watching science in action.
