Simpson Profiles - Kathy

kathyd“Simpson is truly my home,” says Kathy, a physical education/ health/ coaching major with minors in secondary education and management.

It’s no wonder the junior from Spirit Lake, IA feels so at home, she thrives on getting involved in the campus community. The varsity track athlete is also a member of student senate and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In addition, she has been on both the basketball and football cheerleading squads for three years, and has even coached an all-star cheer squad. She currently juggles her own cheerleading practices with being the head coach of a local high school squad.

In addition to cheering for the Storm, Kathy drums up spirit through other campus activities. As a member of Campus Activities Board (CAB) she helps plan campus entertainment. In her current role of Homecoming Chair, she is responsible for planning all homecoming related activities like the Yell like Hell pep rally, skits, street painting, campus decorating, bonfire, tailgates and more.

She rounds out her schedule by volunteering through the Religious Life Community. She even used her spring break to travel to New Orleans and help with Hurricane Katrina clean up efforts. “The devastation was unbelievable. We were there 6 months after the incident and there was still so much left to do. We worked on gutting an entire house for renovation and cleaning up a nunnery. The work we did that week was just a drop in the bucket.”

Kathy plans to spend her life directing and attending student activities. “When I graduate from Simpson I plan to complete my masters degree in education so I can become an athletic director. My professors have given me tremendous support, connections and experiences and I know I will be well prepared."
