From China to Spain, this biology and psychology double-major has had an incredible Simpson journey. A native of Ottumwa, Iowa, Jen has managed to juggle a rigorous schedule of classes, major internships and participation in five honor societies with extensive campus involvement.
"I chose Simpson because it had the perfect location, and the biology facilities really impressed me." With a goal of attending medical school, Jen has really capitalized on Simpson's proximity to Des Moines. She landed an internship with the Radiology Department at Blank Children's Hospital. She has also been a volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Iowa.
"When I was looking for letters of recommendation for medical school, it was hard to decide who to ask only because I had gotten to know so many professors and staff members on campus. Every professor in both the psychology and biology departments knows me by my first name. I never hesitate to ask for help or advice. They enjoy their jobs and it shows in the classroom. Lectures are engaging and exciting."
In addition to being a cheerleader for the Storm, Jen is an active member of her sorority, where she has held positions such as Vice President and Event Chair. She has also chaired committees for Greek Week and Campus Day.
While life on campus keeps her busy, she welcomes the opportunity to expand her horizons.
"Simpson's unique May Term has given me some amazing opportunities. My freshman year I had the opportunity to go to China, and my sophomore year I went to Spain and Italy. It was amazing to be immersed in other cultures. Ultimately, the Simpson Experience is about coming out of your shell and discovering who you are, whether it's through traveling abroad, participating in athletics or just taking on new challenges."
