Anyone who has ever heard Gwen sing knows that the Simpson music major from Blue Springs, Mo. has talent.
The junior has made her mark in a variety of activities since coming to Simpson. In addition to being in the choir, Gwen has had leading roles in 3 operas. Through her May Term opera workshop she had the opportunity to act as assistant director for scenes in an opera production. Her passion for music and Simpson go hand in hand.
“My education at Simpson has been very intimate. Because I spend so much time with my professors they are really like family.”
But Gwen has another talent that is attracting a lot of attention. When she is not performing, rehearsing or studying music, one can find her at Pi Beta Phi, making jewelry. Gwen began making jewelry as a freshman during May Term. With her music classes over she wanted to try something new. She interned with Elements, a Des Moines shop that sells designer jewelry and began the art of working with stones and metal.
Before long, she found herself in the role of entrepreneur. Her first sales were to the artists at the Des Moines Metro Opera. Now her work is displayed and sold at various Des Moines area boutiques as well as locations in Kansas City and Los Angeles.
While Gwen came to Simpson to pursue her love of music, she discovered a flair for designing jewelry and has turned it into a successful business. Upon graduation she plans to sing professionally, but her growing jewelry business could play a significant role in her plans.
