Political Science
Eduardo Magalhaes
I came straight to Simpson College after completing my Ph.D. at the University of Iowa, where I studied comparative politics. I always intended to teach at a small, liberal arts college just like Simpson. My teaching responsibilities include courses in comparative politics, including areas like Latin America, Western Europe, and Asia. I also teach the two-course sequence in world politics, and recently designed new courses in Latino Politics in the United States, and Women in Politics. As advisor to the Model United Nations group, I have taken students to the Midwest Model United Nations conference in St. Louis the past eighteen years. I am a member of the North Central Council of Latin Americanists and twice served as president of the organization.
Originally from Illinois, I spent a three-year stretch in high school living in Brazil. Every few years I take Simpson students on a May Term trip to learn about Brazilian politics and culture. I live on a small acreage just outside of Indianola with my wife and four children, ages six to twelve.
