Political Science

John Epperson

I was born in Ohio, grew up in Kentucky and attended Centre College, where I planned to major in biology and go on to medical school like many in my family.  In my first year I fell in love with politics and became a political science major.  The world of medicine is better off because of my decision.  I thought about law school (don't all political science majors?) but decided to go to graduate school at the University of Virginia to pursue a Ph.D. and a career in teaching politics.

My studies focused on political parties and constitutional law, and after graduation I was hired by Simpson College.  I have spent a very enjoyable career sharing my passion and knowledge about American politics with our students.  My current research focus in on the Supreme Court, including a study of Justice Samuel Alito's first few years on the Court, but I also teach courses like political parties, the presidency, and introductory American government.

For the last several years, I have been an on-air commentator on U.S. politics and elections for ABC Channel 5 in Des Moines.  I live in Indianola and spend most of my free time with my family, but I also enjoy reading (especially biographies and history) and cheering on Ohio State football and University of Kentucky basketball.
