The Physical Education Department has, as its mission, the educational development of the student major for a productive, professional career in the fields of education, sports medicine, wellness, recreation or athletics. In addition, we seek to provide, for all students, the information necessary to implement life long living patterns which will enhance the quality of responsible lives through the development of critical thinking, productive work ethic and citizenship with wholesome, healthful and personal fitness habits.
The Physical Education and Athletics Department offers basic and advanced courses designed to prepare students in the fields of physical education, recreation and athletics. Course work may lead to teaching certification in physical education or health, entry level positions in sport administration, preparation for coaching or for positions in recreation, wellness, or athletic training. Through additional work at the graduate level positions in physical or occupational therapy or middle to upper level sports administration may be possible.
Students must complete the following courses regardless of the concentration area selected. Students must successfully complete all courses with a grade of C- or better within the departmental core and a major concentration area to obtain a major. Courses in a Physical Education major or minor may not be combined with other majors or minors within the department.

Physical Education Major with Education Concentration
Teacher Education Program requires a 2.75 minimum cumulative GPA for students to be eligible to be accepted into student teaching levels.Student teaching must be successfully completed to be eligible for teacher licensure. However, the major degree with an education concentration may be obtained if student teaching is not successfully completed, but all other requirements have been met.
NOTE TO STUDENTS: In some cases, the Iowa State Department of Education requirements change after a College Catalog has been published. It is essential that students work with the Education Department's Program and Advising Handbook in order to ensure compliance with current state regulations.

To be accepted into the Student Teaching Program, students must successfully complete methods courses at Simpson College. Also, you must meet the approved license program that is on file at the Iowa Department of Education at the time you apply for your license; college catalog requirements may or may not be consistent with licensure requirements.
