Simpson College offers, for those who wish to pursue the coaching profession, the Iowa State Board of Educational Examiners Coaching Authorization. The coaching experiences, information and learning opportunities acquired through this course of study does not necessarily qualify participants to immediately become head coaches of all varsity sports. Sports Administration majors are encouraged to take Psychology 201. Students seeking licensure in teaching must take Education 165 in lieu of Psychology 201. After completion of the coaching authorization course work, a student who obtains a teaching license in the state of Iowa, may then change the authorization status to a coaching endorsement with the Iowa State Board of Educational Examiners. Coaching endorsement, K-12, may then be placed on the Iowa teaching certificate.
Physical Education 319, Coaching Internship, is not required, but highly recommended. It is through this learning experience that students are able to gain valuable insight as to what the real profession of coaching has to offer. Students, in most cases, must now apply for the coaching authorization before they are able to obtain a coaching position, for the internship or a job, in the state of Iowa. It is recommended that students pursue a coaching opportunity for credit after the course work is completed, to help enhance the knowledge and experience base in coaching from the Simpson College program.
