Oct. 15, 2009

Simpson College will host a lecture given by Jay Labov on Oct. 15. He will be speaking on “Science, Evolution and Creationism: The Critical Need for Science as a Liberal Art in the 21st Century.”

Labov is the senior advisor for education and communications for the National Academies, an organization that brings together committees of experts in all areas of science and technology in order to address critical issues and give advice to the federal government and the general public.

Labov currently leads an institution-wide effort to expand the National Academies’ work in education. He has also taught at the college-level for 18 years as a member of the biology faculty at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Labov come to Simpson and lead conversations about teaching evolution,” said Jackie Brittingham, department chair for the biology department here at Simpson. “I was at the Iowa Academy of Science Meeting last April where he gave a keynote address on this topic, and it was an incredible lecture that really resonated with the audience.
