Francisco Jimenez, a professor at Santa Clara University, will present “The Discovery of Self, Purpose and Place Through Writing” Nov. 13 in Smith Chapel at 1 p.m.
The lecture is being held in junction with events taking place with Jimenez at Amos Hiatt Middle School in Des Moines Nov. 12.
As a child, Jimenez moved to the United States with his family from Tlaquepague, Mexico, to work in the fields in California. He has written two award-winning novels about the experiences of immigration, a collection of autobiographical short stories entitled The Circuit: Stories for the Life of a Migrant Child and its sequel Breaking Through.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Jimenez was the director of the Ethnic Studies Program at Santa Clara from 2000 to 2005 and now teaches in the department of modern languages and literatures. He was chosen as the 2002 U.S. Professor of the Year by CASE and Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
