Opera class performs scene recitals

May 14, 2008

Students in the Simpson music department’s May Term Opera Workshop will perform two opera scene recitals May 14 and 15 at 6:30 p.m. in Lekberg Hall.

The recitals will feature scenes from traditional and contemporary operas, operettas and musical theatre. About 60 students will perform under the direction of faculty members Robert Larsen, Kimberly Roberts and Bruce Brown.

The Wednesday performance will include a presentation of the one-act opera “A Dream Fulfilled: The Saga of George Washington Carver,” a new work commissioned by the Des Moines Metro Opera in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. The opera describes the life of Carver, who once attended Simpson College, during his time in Iowa.

Scene recitals are free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required.
