Simpson hosts ‘Chemistry of Brewing’

Dr. Bob Bates will present “The Chemistry and Alchemy of Brewing” March 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Simpson College in Jordan Lecture Hall.

During the presentation, Bates will discuss the brewing process from raw material selection and preparation through fermentation and consumption, with an emphasis on the major pathways used by brewers to produce a wide-range of beers.

Bates is a professor emeritus of food science in the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department at the University of Florida, where he taught for more than 40 years. Before joining the University of Florida, he spent a year at the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama, located in Guatemala. He received his doctorate in food technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to teaching and speaking on various food science and technology topics, Bates has also completed multiple international assignments in places such as Asia, South America and the Caribbean.
