Irshad Manji, a Canadian-born Muslim and author, will speak in Des Moines during the Jewish Foundation of Greater Des Moines’ 29th annual Teacher’s Institute, entitled, “Critical Thinking in a Global World.”
The event is co-sponsored by Simpson College and the Jewish Foundation of Greater Des Moines and will take place March 31 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 924 Polk Boulevard.
The evening is specifically designed for educators, school administrators and college and university students.
The event will begin with a viewing of Manji’s documentary, “Faith Without Fear,” and continue with dinner. After dinner, Manji will participate in an open discussion with the audience, led by Patricia Young, professor of education at Simpson College.
Many Simpson College classes will also be in attendance.
Manji is the author of “The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim’s Call for Reform in Her Faith,” which encourages Muslims throughout the world to reclaim the Islamic principle of “ijtihad” or critical thinking. Manji urges members of her faith to engage in debate and address critical world issues such as freedom and human rights.
The event is free, but pre-registration is required. Reservations can be made by e-mailing dorothea@dmjfed.org.
