The Corporation for National and Community Service named Simpson College to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.
The Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Simpson was one of only 528 schools nationally to receive the award.
Simpson College also received the award in its debut year of 2006 and continues to improve the college’s commitment to service and graduating engaged global citizens and leaders.
Steps taken in 2007 include:
- Increasing the number of service-learning courses, from 12 in the 2006-2007 academic year to 22 in the fall semester of 2007 alone.
- Increasing the number of Wesley Service Scholarships, from 50 in 2006 to 95 in 2007. Scholarship recipients offer at least 80 hours of service.
- Doubling the number of AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers in an effort to encourage the entire college community—students, staff, faculty and administrators—to become more involved in service.
