2012 Guest Clinicians/Judges

    ericrichards Dr. Eric Richards

 A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Richards is a composer/arranger, conductor, trombonist, and educator active in a wide range of musical media and styles. He has written compositions, arrangements, and orchestrations for a diverse array of groups and situations, to include: renowned wind ensembles, big bands, and symphony orchestras, various chamber media, commercial recording projects, and marching bands. His 1st String Quartet was hailed by the Washington Post as "...a work of propulsive genius." In March 2006, Dr. Richards was chosen from a select group of composers to present an original work for jazz orchestra at the 1st International Jazz Composition Symposium at the University of South Florida. His music is imbued with a love of American art music, jazz, and vernacular styles while also strongly influenced by the musical languages of Brazil, Cuba, and Africa.

For two decades, Eric served as Composer/Arranger with the United States Army Field Band, the Army's premiere touring ensemble based near Washington DC. Prior to joining the faculty at UNL, he served as Music Department Coordinator, Director of Instrumental Music, and Assistant Professor of Music Theory/Technology at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska. Eric holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (Composition) degree from the University of Maryland at College Park where he studied with Mark Wilson and Robert Gibson. He received both a Master of Music (Composition) and a Bachelor of Science (Music Education) degree from Duquesne University where he studied with John Wilson and Joseph Wilcox Jenkins.

Mr. John Kizilarmut

Mr. John Kizilarmut holds a BSEd in Instrumental Music Education from Northwest Missouri State University and a MM in Percussion Performance-Jazz Emphasis from the University of Texas at Austin. He has recorded with a wide range of artists, from jazz pianist Anthony Belfiglio to the Grammy Award winning DJ Starscream. John has also worked professionally with several jazz luminaries, including Branford Marsalis, Ron Westray and Slide Hampton.

In May 2006, John presented a clinic entitled "Jazz Vibraphone for the College Percussionist" and performed with drummer Greg Bissonette at the East Central University Day of Percussion. He has also been active in DCI, both as an instructor and arranger for several Drum Corps. John currently has a teaching studio at Joyful Noise in West Des Moines, IA and is serving as an adjunct percussion instructor at Northwest Missouri State University.

    Dr. James Bunte

     A native of Colorado, Dr. James Bunte has earned degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder (BM, BME), and CCM (MM, saxophone performance, DMA is ABD). As a concert saxophonist, James Bunte is an active recitalist, giving recitals and master classes throughout the United States and most recently France. Having presented his Carnegie Hall debut in 2006, he has performed at NASA (North American Saxophone Alliance) regional and national conferences. Bunte is the regular saxophonist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and has recorded six compact discs with the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops. Bunte has performed with the Lyrique en Mer Orchestra (France), Dayton Philharmonic, Eugene Symphony, Charleston Symphony, Richmond Symphony (IN), Kentucky Symphony, Springfield Symphony (OH) and the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra.

Bunte is also an experienced jazz musician, having toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines; and having performed with Ray Charles, Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices, Dick Hyman, Byron Stripling, John Pizzarelli, Stefan Carlsson, Cook, Dixon and Young, and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Bunte has been on the faculty at the University of Oregon, Miami University (OH) and Northern Kentucky University, but he also has public school experience at a Kentucky high school. James Bunte is a Yamaha and Vandoren Artist.

Where do we unload the equipment?
At the East entrance of the music building which is located on Buxton Street.

Is there a campus map available?
A map of the campus is available here.

Where will the buses/equipment vehicles park?
Once you arrive and unload the equipment, the drivers will be directed to suitable parking.

Do I need to fill out any judge's forms?
We have the judge's forms here. All we need from you is three copies of a list of your tunes and soloists.

Where and when will we warm up?
The warm up room is Harris Hall (band room) and you will be given a half hour prior to your performance time for warm up.
