Volunteer Opportunities Nearby

Many of the service opportunities available at Simpson College are through the Religious Life Council.  Here are the opportunities for each day of the week.  Other opportunities are provided through the Lilly Foundation, the Religious Life Council and regular classwork.

Monday

Shalom Zone leaves at 3:00 and works with inner city children during an after school program at Gatchel United Methodist Church that focuses on reaching out to the kids in an intentional Christian manner.  Students provide a hot meal, do a devotional and work on computer skills and homework with the children.

Sometimes Sophia (woman's group) goes to Wild Girls, where they work with young girls to empower and inspire greatness in an after school program.

Tuesday  
Wednesday Shalom Zone again serves with children.
Thursday

Breakfast Club leaves the chapel early morning at 6:00 to share breakfast with children at Trinity United Methodist Church in Des Moines. 

Those in Haven Club leave at 2:15 to help out at an after school program sponsored by Children and Family Urban Ministries.  It invites members of the Simpson community to come and participate in after-school reading, writing, and social skills activities with Des Moines area school children.

The Literacy Club is a part of Shalom Zone Ministries at Gatchel United Methodist Church in Des Moines.  While there students work one-on-one with a child whom they have been matched with.  Students help the children with specific areas at school that they need additional help, such as reading and computer skills. 

Student workers leave the BSC Patio at 5:00pm to drive to downtown Des Moines' Catholic Worker House, where they help serve the evening meal, meet with the people they serve, and clean up afterwards. 

Friday  
Saturday Every other week (in season) Habitat for Humanity travels to a site to help build a house in conjunction with the Warren County Habitat.  These projects are announced ahead of time through email and usually take place in the mornings, leaving from the chapel.
Other During Spring and Fall Break, many alternative trips for service and reflection are available.  Some of the past trips include New Orleans, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Mexico.
