Martin Luther King Day
Simpson College is planning for a special campus observance for the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Each year, the third Monday in January has been set aside nationally to recognize King’s birthday.
The speaker for the 2011 for the MLK Day observance will be. Ed C. Barnes. Ed C. Barnes is an innovative person known for utilizing and developing processes and programs which increase organizational effectiveness and individual performance. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Willkie House, Inc, a youth development and child enrichment center and the oldest African -American community-based organization in the state of Iowa, having been in operation for more than 93 years.
Ed has served as board member of the Iowa Civil Rights Advisory Rights Committee, and past board member of Heartland Area Education Association. Currently he is a member of the Governor's Advisory Committee on Substance Abuse, a member of the Governor’s Task Force of Juvenile Detention and a member of the Iowa Practice Improvement Collaborative.
MLK Day of Service 2011
WHAT: Honor Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy by spending a day doing service with other area institutions and middle school students. Projects include: fleece tie blankets for local shelters, health kits for Lutheran World Relief, and many more!
WHO: Anyone!! Students who volunteer will be excused from classes on this day.
