Current Student Profiles

Class of 2007

Scott Bonz:  Scott is pursuing a major in Mathematics and a minor in History.  At this time, Scott is considering a career in actuarial science or a business related field.  Scott is also leaving open the possibility of attending graduate school.

Natalie Chizek:  Natalie plans to get a major in Mathematics and a minor in Management.  At this time, Natalie is considering a career in actuarial science or a business related field.  Natalie is a member of the women’s team soccer at Simpson College and is a past winner of the team MVP award.

Jean Clipperton:  Jean is getting a double major in Mathematics and Spanish and a minor in Philosophy with the intention of attending graduate school.  Jean has twice been a member of Mathematical Contest in Modeling teams that earned the award of Successful Participant.  Jean conducted research using mathematical models that try to explain how humans became one of the more dominant species on the planet and presented her results at the 2004/2005 Iowa Philosophical Association Conference. This summer, Jean participated in the Research Experience for Undergraduates at Valparaiso University where she conducted research in graph labelings.  Jean is currently focusing her graduate school search on programs that emphasize interdisciplinary study.  Jean served as a peer advisor to 18 first year calculus students in fall 2004 as part of the Liberal Arts Seminar program.  She also provided supplemental instruction to students in Intermediate Algebra in 2004-2006 as an Undergraduate Assistant.  In 2006-2007, Jean will be an Undergraduate Research Assistant working with Dr. Czarneski in Graph Theory.

“Prospective employers and graduate schools hope that students graduate from college with the skills to communicate, work in teams and handle the open-ended problems that are a regular part of the working environment.  The Mathematical Contest in Modeling is one of many experiences we provide our students that gives them first hand experience to develop these skills.  The contest also gives our students the external validation they need of the strength of their mathematical and communication skills.  No classroom activities can match the contest in the ability to build self-confidence.”  Murphy Waggoner, Professor of Mathematics, Simpson College.

Randall Meyer:  Randall is pursuing a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science.  At this time, Randall is considering a career in actuarial science or a business related field.  Randall is also leaving open the possibility of attending graduate school.

Laura Preston:  Laura will double major in Mathematics and Accounting and intends to take the CPA exam upon graduation.  Laura has participated in track and volleyball while attending Simpson College.

“The analytical and problem solving skills one develops when studying Accounting and Mathematics are a perfect compliment to one another.  We have found that our majors who also study Mathematics have many job opportunities and are more likely to get accepted into the top MBA programs.”  Mark Juffernbruch, Associate Professor of Accounting, Simpson College.

Class of 2008

Jonna Anderson:  Jonna’s current plans are to major in Mathematics and minor in Biology and she is thinking about graduate school.  Jonna conducted research last year on the topic of sperm competition and presented her results at the Midwest Undergraduate Mathematics Symposium.  This summer, Jonna participated in the Research Experience for Undergraduates at the University of Nebraska where she was a member of a student research team that created a mathematical model to study the survival strategy of cannibalism.  Jonna will serve as a peer advisor to 18 first year calculus students in fall 2006 as part of the Liberal Arts Seminar program.

Danielle Shelley:  Danielle is planning on finished a major in Mathematics and a minor in Secondary Education.  Her plans are teach mathematics in a high school in Iowa.  This fall Danielle is completing part of her mathematics degree while attending Curtin University in Australia.

Nick Hay:  Nick’s current plans are to major in Mathematics and minor in a business related field.  This fall Nick will start conducting research about game theory being applied to legal areas.  Nick’s plans are to either attend law school or a graduate program in actuarial science.

Ryan McDonough:  Ryan’s current plans are to major in mathematics with the intentions of teaching high school mathematics and coaching football.  Ryan is a member of the Simpson College football team and is the projected starter at quarterback.

“The logical reasoning, organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills one develops when studying mathematics is a huge asset on the football field.  No more so than in the position of quarterback, where the ability of reading defenses and making quick decisions on the fly are a necessity of a championship caliber quarterback.”  Paul Lounsberry, a 1973 cum laude graduate of Simpson College who majored in Mathematics and is the current Offensive Coordinator of the Simpson College football team.

Tracy Robson:  Tracy’s current plans are to double major in Mathematics and Spanish and she is thinking about attending graduate school.  As a freshman, Tracy was a member of a research team that studied a mathematical model that was created to better understand the dynamics of human cooperation and her team presented the findings at the Midwest Undergraduate Mathematics Symposium.  This summer, Tracy participated in the Research Experience for Undergraduates at the University of Nebraska where she was a member of a student research team that created a mathematical model to study the survival strategy of cannibalism.  She also provided supplemental instruction to students in Intermediate Algebra in 2005-2007 as an Undergraduate Assistant.

Class of 2009

Tim Fairfield:  Tim’s current plans are to double major in Mathematics and computer science.  Tim was a member of a Mathematical Contest in Modeling team that earned the award of Honorable Mention and presented their results at the Midwest Undergraduate Mathematics Symposium.  Tim will be conducting research in the fall using mathematical models to better understand the dynamics of human cooperation.
