The schedule for Mathematics Day appears below.

Friday, November 11

6:30 - ?  Pizza and Games - Hosted by the Math Club

Join us for games and pizza.  This is a great opportunity to meet students in the Math Club and hear about their experiences while enjoying some friendly competition.  Let us know if you are interested in staying overnight on campus.

Saturday, November 12

10:00 - 10:30  Check-in - Atrium of Carver Science Center

10:30 - 10:35  Welcome - Dr. Murphy Waggoner, Chair of the Mathematics Department

10:35 - 10:45  Math majors can do anything! - Dr. Murphy Waggoner

Some students are interested in math, but may not think of majoring in the field because they do not know what jobs they can obtain with a math degree.  We will discuss the wide variety of areas that math graduates have gone into using the skills they learned through studying mathematics.  We will also explain why a math degree is so valuable to employers.

10:45 - 11:15  Interactive presentation about a mathematical topic

A mathematics professor will give an interactive talk about some interesting mathematics.  For example, last year we learned how to use probability theory to increase the odds of winning a simple game that involved coin flipping.

11:15 – 11:45  How I use math in my career  - Simpson Math Graduates

Several graduates will discuss their careers and how they use math on a daily basis.

11:45 - 12:15  Who studies mathematics? - Faculty, Graduates, & Current Students

You will meet current students and hear why they chose to study mathematics, what careers they plan to pursue, and what studying mathematics in college is all about.  We will also introduce you to our mathematics faculty and some graduates.  You may be surprised by the wide variety of career opportunities afforded to students that study mathematics.

12:15 - 1:00  Lunch, posters, and informal conversations. - Faculty, Graduates, & Current Students

This is your opportunity to connect with other mathematicians.  Many of our current students will make poster presentations highlighting the research they have completed; you will notice that much of their research is interdisciplinary.  You will have the opportunity to talk with graduates about their career paths and experiences. You will also have the opportunity to visit with the mathematics faculty and learn more about the mathematics program at Simpson College.
