Mathematics Majors Can Do Anything!

The Mathematical Sciences Career Information project for nonacademic employment is provided by the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

The Association for Women in Mathematics provides a comprehensive career resources site that is useful for both women and men.  This AWM pamphlet introduces some areas of mathematics and contains a "road map" of mathematics.

MAA Career Profiles has essays authored by people who use mathematics on a daily basis.

The Council for the Mathematical Sciences (CMS) recently created a new MathsCareers website with many interesting articles.

If you are interested in actuarial science, the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society has a website to help you.

If you want to go into education, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has great resources.

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics has links to help you investigate jobs for applied mathematicians.

Graduate Programs

  • IU Math:  The University of Iowa Mathematics Department
  • IU SAS:  The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at UI.  Robert Delsing (2006 graduate) recently earned a masters in this program.
  • IU Biostatistics:  Graduate programs in biostatistics at the University of Iowa.  Laura Becker (2005 graduate) is there now working on a masters degree.
  • ISU Math:  Iowa State University's Mathematics Department
  • ISU Stats:  Iowa State University’s Department of Statistics
  • ISU BCB:  The Bioinformatics and Computational Biology program at ISU
  • UNI Math:  The Department of Mathematics at the University of Northern Iowa
  • UNL Math:  The University of Nebraska Department of Mathematics
  • BGSU Math:  Bowling Green State University Department of Mathematics.  Nate Iverson (2001 graduate) and Shristi Upreti (2005 graduate) went on to study at Bowling Green.  Nate earned his doctoral degree and Shristi is in her second year.
  • OSU Math:  Oklahoma State University Department of Mathematics. Ashley Bennett (2005 graduate) is in her second year of a masters degree in mathematics at OSU.
  • ODU Physics:  The physics program at Old Dominion University.  Aye Win (2005 graduate) is working toward a Ph. D. in physics there.
  • UP Econ:  The economics program at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.  Shikha Basnet (2006 graduate) is in her second year in the Ph.D. program in economics there.
