A. April 3-4th be thinking about if you would like to present on Oral or Poster Presentation.

. We had people volunteer to help at the sign in table and as moderators.

C. There are students coming from several other schools and we wanted a way to get to know the other schools and so everyone felt like they contributed thus we thought each school could bring something that represented their math department or math club.

D. Simpson Math club thus needs to have something representing us we agreed a power point or poster to be displayed in the Atrium.

E. We discussed what events were happening the Friday of MUMS and if anyone had other ideas to improve it.

F. We are giving away door prizes at the end of MUMS Murphy Waggoner needs help making them if anyone would like to contact her.

1. Tee Shirts

A. Lynette is handling the tee shirt orders. She sent out an email with more information

a. We can’t use the same business from past years to create the tee shirts.

b. This year were getting our tee shirts from DHL graphics.

c. Each tee shirt cost $10 each and any profits will go for future math club events and activities.

d. We decided on the colors of red, purple and charcoal gray each of these colors are for the shirt the writing will all be in white.

e. We decided to collect the orders before Thanksgiving break so the orders will be in and dispersed before Christmas break.

f. See the email if you want to know more about tee shirts the orders and money can be put in Lynette’s mailbox or give directly to Dr. Deb Czarneski at her office.

B. Mathematical Contest in Modeling(MCM)/Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling(ICM)

a. This year with the help of SGA we will have a maximum of 18 teams available.

b. Were encouraging other science clubs to get involved and have their members to participate in MCM/ICM. To encourage this math club is looking for people who have participated in MCM/ICM in the past to give a little explanation of what the modeling contest is and why is beneficial at these science club meetings. We need a few people to volunteer to talk to these groups.

C. The discussion of SGA giving us money for MCM/ICM led us to the discussion of becoming a line item group for SGA budget this is because every year we only ask for money for the Modeling competition and if we know how many team at the beginning of the year then this money will be guaranteed annually.

a. We discussed the benefits and disadvantages of becoming a line item for SGA budget.

1. Would ask for $1800 for MCM which is our amount this year going to be enough in the future? Do we see the needing money for other items in the future? One idea was getting money for the prizes given at Midwest Undergraduate Mathematical Symposium (MUMS).

2. A person volunteered to help Lynette with line item status.

D. This led us to the need for a Treasurer to be elected for Math Club next year especially if we choose line item status.

E. Putting up Christmas Decorations in Carver

2. Environmental Awareness Club (EAC)is working on calculating Simpson Colleges carbon footprint

A. They are looking for volunteers to help with the math calculations part of the project. Lynnette is going to find out more information and send out with the specifics.

3. Pi Mu Epsilon (National Mathematics Honor Society)

A. A vote was done through email after the last meeting to see if we should go forward with the petition and become a chapter the results are in and the majority was for going forward a yes vote.

B. Dr. Deb Czarneski wanted it noted that she still feels to go forward may be a mistake and may cause division within the club.

C. Since we are going forward with the process of becoming a chapter the petition that was prepared last year needs to be updated.

a. As a result a subcommittee was formed to help update the petition. The people on the subcommittee are Erin Vinnedge, Greg Rhoulhac, and Emily Wagoner.

D. The logistical part of Math Club and Pi Mu Epsilon was discussed including: having meeting times together or not, officers the same or not, etc.

a. What we decided so far is meet at the same time but have different officers but one person could be both if one both elections.

4. Tee Shirt Designs

A. Lynette’s design was the only idea it includes the words Math Club and the Greek letters for each letter in Math Club.

a. Colors were discussed and voted on. Red and White were chosen.

September 10, 2008

New Business
1. Elections were held. Lynette Snyder was elected President, Michelle Lingscheit was elected Vice President, and Emily Wagoner (me) was elected Secretary.

2. Lynette will renew math club as a registered club on campus.

3. We discussed Simpson's new recruiting technique of using face book and if there was interest in working making a math face book group for this purpose. It was decided that there was interest and Cassie Lacina and Chelsy Croson will be in charge of this project.

4. Tee shirts were discussed being sold. If you have an idea for a tee shirt designs bring it to the next meeting.

5. Pi Mu Epsilon (National Mathematics Honor Society) was discussed. Last year work was done to gather information to become a chapter. The discussion was should we move forward and become a chapter or not. The downside is it could possibly bring division to the members of math club because not everyone will meet the requirements to become a member and its expense to get started. The benefits are if you become a member it looks good on applications to Graduate Schools and Jobs. This decision was tabled until next meeting.

6. The idea was brought up of starting a fund. This will be used for students to apply and get money to go to conferences and present their research. This was agreed to be a good idea as a result math club will have a fund raiser to put money in this fund. The current fund raiser ideas are bake sale, car wash and tee shirts. If you have any fund raiser ideas bring them to the next meeting.

7. A Speaker Series was discussed where the five math professors would discuss their research in a thirty minute talk. Then the following month a new professor will present. One possible time was Tuesdays at 1:00p.m.

8. The next meeting will be Sunday Oct. 12th at 7:00p.m.

Other Info.
The Physics Club is having a star party where they will set up the department telescopes and look at the stars in two weeks at Dr. William Schellhorn and Dr. Deb Czarneski house.
