The Consortium of Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) sponsor three mathematical modeling contest each year:
- HiMCM - a 36-hour contest in November for high school students and the
- MCM and ICM - two 96-hour contests held the first weekend in February for undergraduates.
The following are some materials to help you prepare for these competitions.
- A writing exercise - One of the biggest parts of all the contests is writing up the solution. It is the only way that you have to communicate with the judges and must communicate what you have done and the solution you have found. However, many groups who participate in the competitions for the first time underestimate the time needed for writing. This exercise will help you understand the time commitment needed for the writing portion of the contests.
- Sample problems - Practicing solving modeling problems is a good way to prepare for the contest and this handout gives you two problems in addition to those found on the COMAP site.
- Advice - This slide show was written for a HiMCM workshop, but has good advice for both the high school and undergraduate competitions. It was written by undergraduates who have participated in the competition several times.
- Sample summaries - Here you will find the summaries of all the Simpson teams who have competed in the MCM and ICM. Keep in mind that some of these summaries are better than others. Pay attention to the rankings of each team. Outstanding is the top ranking, then Meritorious and Honorable Mention and finally Successful Participant. It would be a good exercise to look at several summaries and decide what makes one better than another.
